Info/Program note:
Formalist Dance # 1 is a short study in Tiling, a process in which a two-bar phrase consisting of 4 x 3 attacks - all equi-distant from another - is gradually assembled, disassembled and layered according to different contrapuntal and metric relationships. With the exception of the first attack, all remaining attacks are separated by two rests. The basic form of the Tile used in this piece consists of the following eight lines (in which "R" stands for "Rest"):
1 R 1 R 1 R | R R R R R R ||1 R 1 R 1 2 | R R 2 R R 2 ||1 3 1 R 1 2 | R 3 2 R 3 2 ||
1 3 1 R 1 R | R 3 R R 3 R ||1 3 1 4 1 R | 4 3 R 4 3 R || 1 3 1 4 1 2 | 4 3 2 4 3 2 ||
1 3 1 4 1 2 | 4 R 2 4 R 2 ||1 R 1 4 1 R | 4 R R 4 R R ||
